After the success of my Uncle Doug’s 70th birthday Wine Bottle Cake, the pressure was on to come up with something equally impressive for my Aunty Ruth’s 70th birthday. After much deliberation, we decided on a 5 layer “Mount Dandenong Fog Cake” – my take on a London Fog Cake, with the butter cream infused with Melbourne Breakfast Tea instead of English Breakfast Tea.

The cake was then drizzled with a thick, sticky salted caramel sauce and finished off with sugar-craft Peonies that took about three hours each to create. Judging by the comments and the pile of plates left at the end, I’d have to say this cake was a resounding success!

Wine bottle cake for 70th birthday

An Esterházy torte with a fondant base and box, sugarcraft grapes and leaves, shredded coconut “straw” and a fondant bottle with edible printed label. Made for my Uncle Doug’s 70th birthday.

The wording on the label reads:

“A well matured blend from our Hampton, Elsternwick and Caulfield vineyards. Bold, and strong with a warm side. Bone dry, yet very approachable,  just as happy at home with a burger as a banquet with fillet mignon. A timeless classic.”

The label is a parody of the Bannockburn Douglas label (one of Doug’s sentimental favourites), with the eagle being replaced by an old family favourite, a German Short Haired Pointer.  It was designed by my husband Mark and printed by the folks at CustomIcing.com.au

Commissioned for the retirement of a staff member of Hansard. The design consists of two books that represent the official record of the proceedings of the parliament. The likeness must have been pretty good, because the lady who was retiring walked straight past the table twice without realising that the old books sitting there were actually fondant covered chocolate mud cakes!
